reopening cue for the 2020-21 academic year

in march 2020, concordia university of edmonton (cue) made a rapid transition to virtual learning to protect the health of our students, faculty, staff, and community as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. since that initial transition, we have been preparing, planning, and delivering high quality learning experiences while following all public health guidelines and recommendations.

over the summer months, we reaffirmed our commitment to taking the actions necessary to prevent the further spread of covid-19 and announced that our fall semester would be predominately virtual. as we look ahead to the winter semester, our priority remains the health and wellbeing of our campus community, as well as the larger edmonton community. as such, the current model of virtual learning, with limited exceptions for classes and programs that require in-person interaction and extensive experiential learning, will continue for the duration of the winter semester.

november 25, 2020

  • effective immediately, we are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to avoid coming to campus except for in-person classes, studying, or other necessary reasons. all on-campus meetings and events are to be moved to a virtual format, and all employees who can conceivably work from home are to do so for the remainder of the semester.
  • all protocols for on-campus attendance are being strictly enforced. all students and employees are required to wear non-medical face masks and sign in using their cue identification. additionally, cue identification must be carried at all times. guests, including children and family members, are not permitted unless special permission has been granted by administration. the complete list of protocols is available here and your presence on campus implies an understanding and acceptance of each condition.
  • our library remains open for studying and is currently operating at 25% capacity. this is the only study space currently available on campus. library services can also be accessed virtually.
  • various in-person campus services are closed for the remainder of the semester. all services are available virtually. those requiring in-person service should check if the service they need is available in that format prior to coming to campus. our residences, food services, shared kitchen and lounge facilities, and fitness facilities remain closed.
  • the upcoming winter semester will be predominately virtual, with limited exceptions for classes and programs that require in-person interaction and extensive experiential learning. the list of learning experiences that will be available on-campus this winter is available here
  • restrictions on our international programs remain in place. these restrictions apply to both our student exchange and study abroad programs.
  • all in-person thunder athletics practices have been cancelled. we are not participating in the 2021 acac winter season; however, we will continue to support our student athletes and remain appreciative for their dedication to cue.

keeping our campus safe and healthy

we are all responsible for the health and safety of our community. as we work together to gradually and safely resume on-campus activities and events, we remain committed to following public health guidelines and recommendations to prevent the further spread of covid-19.

in addition to asking any person showing symptoms of covid-19 to leave campus immediately and requiring the use of face masks in all indoor public spaces, we are implementing protocols and other measures aligned with public health regulations and recommendations.

  • custodial services will be implementing enhanced cleaning strategies and techniques as per the infection/prevention and control guidance provided by health canada. facilities will be cleaned and managed accordingly to prevent the spread of covid-19.
  • we are limiting on-campus attendance to students, faculty, staff, and long-term tenants. appropriate physical distancing (two metres) is required at all times and our facilities will be managed differently in order to protect the health and safety of our community.
  • employees will be continuing to work remotely when possible. this will not impact the delivery of services or programs on-campus.
  • gatherings and events on campus will look very different this year. we have developed a new process for planning and organizing events that assess potential risks and prioritizes health and safety.

as alberta post-secondary institutions, we have an important role to play in preventing the spread of covid-19. we will take a responsible and proactive approach that balances our goal of supporting our students in achieving their learning objectives with the safety and health of our learners and institutional team members. while the decisions made by each institution will be unique to the institution needs and context, we are collectively utilizing alternative delivery models and solutions as well as staffing models to ensure that our doors remain open.

we recognize that the decisions we make today will need to be sustainable into the months ahead. because the situation regarding covid-19 is dynamic, we will continue to follow the advice of public health agencies as it is updated.
